As the replacement of oil, it is usually suggested by the number of covered kilometres, so the air filters should be replaced at least once every two years or every 30 thousand kilometres. It does not result from the use, but because of the tightness of the polyurethane seals, which lose leakage proof after some time and at 85 degrees Celsius. On the other hand, the frequency of the replacement of fuel filters (especially gasoline), the producers suggest to do it between 15 and 30 thousand kilometres. In the case of diesel, they suggest to do it often, because of the difficult operating conditions, the need to retain water, paraffin emitted at low temperatures and clogging the filter.
The market filters offer includes also “Long Life”, i.e. air filters with prolonged period of operation. They are mainly used mainly in trucks. They maintain the range of 80-100 thousand kilometres. In addition, the range of “Long Life” includes the oil filters that should be replaced after approx. 60 thousand kilometres and, what is the most important, they require the use of engine oils with longer life. Otherwise, their use is pointless.
Why are filters used?
The carried out tests of driving with and without an oil filter proved that an engine wears five times faster. Therefore, all dirt like dust, road dust, which were not stopped by the filters, fall into the engine compartment. It gradually translates to faster wearing of bushings, injection, pumping injectors, it adversely impacts of the Common Rail system, and as a result leads to the worn and failed engine. It is worth noting that despite the standards for stopping of 2 kg dust in the filter, there are products on the market, the effectiveness of which is twice as high, and stop even 4 kg of dust.
Storage and assessment of the purchase
Pleated paper is inside the filter. Side seals can deform. Therefore, air humidity is important. The lowest storage temperature is 8-10 degrees Celsius. Usually, the filters are packed in a box. In addition, they can be wrapped in a film, which occurred less frequently, but it is much more favourable for the product.
When choosing the panel air filters, make sure that the pleats are not deformed or broken, that they are covered with polyurethane, and what the seal condition is. Installation of the defective filter is associated with leakage, through which air passes readily than through the filtration surface.
Types of filters
There are two types of oil filters: can and oil cartridges. Choosing the right filter for your car, you should know about this difference. Oil cartridges differ primarily with dimensions (diameter, height), accuracy and filtration surface. As far as can filters are concerned, in addition to differences in dimensions, accuracy and filtration surface, we also have non-return valves and by-pass valves, which open at pressures suitable for a particular car model.
The most frequent errors when replacing the oil filter
- haste; remember to clean the oil filter housing when replacing the cartridge
- use the old seals
- unscrewed or too much screwed can or housing, causing oil leakage
Replacement of the filter – tips for service providers
Most of the can oil filters are located under the engine, so to get to it, we have to pick up the car or drive on the canal. Unscrew the filter with a wrench. This can be either a terminal band with a handle or a wrench. Seals to be replaced with the replacement of the filter, are available with the set. Grease the seal with a bit of fresh oil, screw the filter, and pour oil into the engine. Similar rules exist for cartridges of the oil filter. Unscrew the bottom and pull out the cartridge. Clean the oil filter housing from old oil and debris. Oil the seals of the set and replace. Screw the bottom.
Remember! After replacing the oil and the oil filter, start the engine and check that the filter cover is tight and that there is no leakage from the oil drain plug.
When replacing the oil or all filters, the car producers recommend a test drive at a distance of 2-5 km, after which the quality control will ensure that the service is carried out correctly, and the customer will not have problems with the car immediately after leaving the workshop.
What is clogged/worn filter dangerous?
In normal operation of the engine, the impurities during the oil flow through the filter are separated and stopped on the filter surface of the cartridge, to a greater or lesser extent – depending on the filter quality. Over time, the oil flow resistance through the filter increases, which means that the filter is clogged, increasing the pressure in the filter.
The clogged filter passes by the filter system by opening the bypass valve, and therefore dirty oil gets to the engine. In the worst situation, the following can occur:
- increased pressure and tearing of paper, and even crushing of paper,
- damaged can and thrown away seal, resulting in oil spill
- introduction of impurities into the engine, which can accelerate wearing
- lack of oil pressure and damage to the engine.
