Take care of your health – check and replace cabin filters

Cabin air filters, also known as dust filters, clean the air entering the car interior from harmful substances such as: bacteria, soot, pollen, fungal spores, exhaust gases and industrial gases. This type of filters requires regular inspection and possible replacement. Unfortunately, many drivers ignore this aspect, which causes that a whole range of the above-mentioned pollutants get into the lungs of passengers. This not only has a great influence on the health – in the form of tearing eyes, conjunctivitis, frequent sneezing, running nose or coughing, but also for safety – the driver is tired more quickly and reacts more slowly to road hazards.

In today’s cars, often additionally equipped with air conditioning, cabin air filters are a standard solution. In the interests of health and comfort of travellers, the best cartridge manufacturers are preparing many amenities. When designing dust filters, the key emphasis is put on the quality, durability and properties of nonwovens whose task is to stop contaminants. Manufacturers offer two basic types of cabin filters:

• standard filters – their construction is based on paper inserts (filter papers)

• filters with active carbon layer – absorbing gaseous pollutants, such as: exhaust gases, smog or unpleasant odours.

When purchasing this type of filters, select reliable manufacturers who have implemented quality systems. This guarantees that the products have passed the required tests and meet the highest quality parameters. In addition, you should also consider the purpose of the filter.

Standard filters, so-called dust particles only retain larger dust particles, their structure consists of a polyester-polypropylene nonwoven, providing high throughput and the ability to absorb pollutants. Thus, particles such as dust, pollen, fungal spores, smoke, exhaust particles, soot or rubber particles from worn-out tires do not get into the car’s cabin.

If the driver struggles with allergies, it is recommended to use an activated carbon cabin filter. This type of filters not only retains dust, but also absorbs harmful gases as well as any unpleasant odours. In addition, they eliminate the causes of rapid fatigue, discomfort and mental distraction. Activated carbon filters are especially recommended for drivers moving in urban agglomerations, where they spend a lot of time standing in traffic jams. Used in dusty conditions, they require more frequent replacement than standard ones. It’s worth to mention that these types of filters do not contain hazardous or harmful substances.

A sign of the used cabin air filter is becoming less airflow performance – air entering the cabin of the vehicle, steaming windows, musty smell.

It is worth remembering that the cabin air filter is related to increased level of dust in air – up to six times higher inside the car than outside. Inhaling such air, even for completely healthy people, can cause irreversible health effects. The replacement of cabin air filters should be carried out especially in autumn due to the high humidity inside the vehicle and in the spring due to the high air dustiness.
